Job Description:
Civic Ensemble is celebrating 10 years of engaging our local community in creating theatre the explores pressing questions and concerns.
Purpose of work study position: The Theatrical Production Associate will support the Civic Ensemble team in producing our newest community-based play, Fertile Grounds, working in the pre-production and community engagement aspects of the production, and then in the rehearsal room as the Assistant Director of the play.
The role is a balance of artistic, programmatic, and administrative duties that will complement study in theatre, community organizing, youth development, social justice, or other such fields.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in theatre arts, and the role of the arts in community-engaged work and social justice, and will support skill-building for professional theatre.
Responsibilities:
Pre-production (January-March)
• Collaborate with Civic Ensemble staff to prepare for the upcoming production of Fertile Grounds, including attending production meetings, preparing materials for rehearsals;
• Support community engagement for the play, including researching local partners whose work aligns with the themes of the play
Production (April-June)
• As Assistant Director: Attend rehearsals and support Director and actors, which may include helping actors learn their lines, standing in for an actor who is absent, etc.
• Other duties as necessary
The intent of this position is to continue working into the summer term, in order to stay in the project through the performances in June. Ideally, the applicant will be available to stay in Ithaca after the end of the spring term, through at least June. The student will need to have their own housing. If eligible, the student employee will continue on as a FWS employee. If circumstances do not allow, Civic Ensemble may higher the person directly. Required Qualifications/Skills/Experience:
• Some experience of theatre and a theatrical rehearsal process
• Strong communication skills
• Basic computer skills such as online research and familiarity with Google Suite tools (Drive, Docs, etc.)
• Experience or interest in the intersections of theatre and social justice
